Leadership Seminar
Jakarta
Ms. Kathryn Anne Rivai , Principal Seri Insan Secondary School Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, talked about Leadership in Change; Effective Leaders in School Reform.
During the first module, Ms. Kathryn spoke about "What is change and the process of change in our schools today." According to her, principals play a pivotal role in school reform in the 21st century thereby they have to know how to cope with these transformations.
Consequently, in the second module entitled “Useful tips for the C21st School for new and
'old' school leaders in this era of change,” the presenter showed a variety of pictures of world leaders and asked the participants to choose their favorite leader. Most of the participants chose Mahatma Gandhi as their most favorite leader because of his charisma and the fact that he led “by heart.” Everybody concurred that he had inspired millions around the world.
In the 3rd module, “What is effective leadership in times of change”, Kathryn introduced the “4E’s.” A great leader must be able to; Envision, Enable Empower and Energize. An effective leader must be able to have a clear vision and be able to strategize to be able to realize his vision. He /she must also exhibit energy and commitment to see the job through.
"A good leader is a leader whose followers all are leaders too."
The post lunch session entitled “Leading change in your school” was very interesting too; Ms Kathryn organized small group discussions in which the participants talked about common issues facing school leaders. Each group was given two problems to analyze and solve. Afterwards, each group’s results were shared with the others. And the last module was “The senior management team”
The entire training session was motivating and thought provoking. The speaker’s energy and commitment were contagious. To quote Ms. Kathryn Anne Rivai;
“The successful leader is a leader who leads by heart.”
She herself has demonstrated this. She led whole session by heart and inspired all. (Ikke)
